Résumé

Les bandeaux métalliques égéens, au nombre de quatre-vingt-quatorze, forment un ensemble d’ornements particuliers où peu de reconstitutions de leurs ports ont été conduites. Grâce à mon étude technologique, j’ai pu observer des déformations et des stries aux extrémités de certains d’entre eux. En ce sens, je propose un port du bandeau métallique combiné à un matériau en tissu pour pouvoir le maintenir sur la tête du porteur. En plus de le consolider, cette association aurait permis de mieux fixer le bandeau dans les cheveux, le tissu pouvant, par exemple, être noué derrière la tête. Cette matière périssable, aujourd’hui disparue, n’aurait pu être conservée que sous des conditions taphonomiques favorables. En raison de cette association, les bandeaux deviendraient des ornements composites. En ce sens, il a été nécessaire de tester cette hypothèse par la mise en place d’un programme d’archéologie expérimentale visant à restituer le port des bandeaux, au sein duquel nous nous sommes efforcées d’utiliser des matériaux proches de ceux employés pendant l’âge du Bronze.

Abstract

The Aegean Bronze Age metal headbands, ninety-four in number, form a set of particular ornaments, about which few reconstructions of the way they were worn have been carried out. Through my technological study, I was able to observe deformations and use-wear traces at the extremities of some of these artefacts. Based on this evidence, I suggest that the metal headband was worn in combination with a fabric material, which would have helped secure the position of the headband on the wearer’s head. In addition to securing its position, this association would have made it possible to better fix the headband in the hair, the fabric being able, for example, to be tied behind the head. This perishable material could only have been preserved under favourable taphonomic conditions, and it is thus not yet known from the archaeological context. Due to this association, however, the headbands would have become composite ornaments. It was, therefore, necessary to test this hypothesis through an experimental archaeology project aimed at restoring the way in which these headbands were worn by the use of materials similar to those used during the Bronze Age in the Aegean.
